A Radar Detector is an effective and proven way to protect yourself from a speeding ticket. Check out our FAQ (frequently asked questions) for more helpful information. There are 3 main frequency areas that police radar works in, generically known as X band (11 GHz), K band (24 GHz) and Ka band (32- 36 GHz). All a radar detector does is listen to those frequencies and beep, chirp and flash when it receives a signal. The more sensitive it is, the earlier it will warn you.

Bill 49 improves traffic safety in Alberta

Edmonton...
The Alberta Legislature passed Bill 49, the Traffic Safety Amendment Act 2007, which aims to reduce speeding and increase safety at urban intersections.

“Using red light cameras to identify vehicles that speed through intersections is a prudent way to increase safety for all drivers and passengers,” said Art Johnston, MLA for Calgary-Hays, who introduced the legislation. “There is widespread concern for traffic safety and this legislation fits perfectly with the other traffic safety initiatives the province has been taking.”

There are a number of key components of Bill 49, the Traffic Safety Amendment Act 2007.

  • The legislation defines how an ‘intersection safety device’, also known as ‘Speed on Green’, will be used to gather evidence on red light and speeding infractions. This evidence can now be introduced in court by affidavit.
  • A liability cap has been added for the vehicle leasing and sale industry. The responsibility these parties have when a leased or loaned vehicle is in a collision is now limited.
  • Photocopies of registrations for Class 4 commercial trailers are allowed to be carried as an option to the original certificate, saving industry time and money.
  • The process for court review of decisions of the Alberta Transportation Safety Board will be streamlined.
  • The legislation cracks down on impaired driving by considering blood alcohol readings taken up to three hours after driving to be the same as the blood alcohol concentration at the time of driving.
“It is good to see that other members of the Legislative Assembly feel as strongly about traffic safety as I do,” said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation. “Together we have to ensure motorists in this province take safety seriously by slowing down, staying sober, paying attention and buckling up.”

Improving traffic safety is part of Premier Ed Stelmach’s plan to secure Alberta’s future by building communities, greening our growth and creating opportunity.

Is it Legal to use?
In Canada, Radar Detectors are legal to use in province of AB, BC, SK and are illegal in NB, MB, ON, QC, NS, NL, PE, NT, YT, NU.

In USA, Radar detectors are completely legal to use in non-commercial vehicles in 49 states. Virginia and Washington DC are the only places in the United States that currently ban radar detectors. Radar detector use in commercial vehicles has been prohibited in the U.S. since 1995.

We do not track detector regulations in other countries.
New Microcircuitry
Radar detectors have continued to improve with the advances in micro-circuitry, and improved logic and signal processing. The most advanced radar detectors are now able to detect all forms of radar in use, as well as laser, at greater distances than ever before, often miles in advance. Additionally, some radar detectors even will show the number of signals they are receiving, and from what direction the radar is being detected. Other common radar detector options include the ability to hard wire the unit directly into your car, as well as improved resistance to false alarms.
